Access 2007: The Missing Manual

TitleAccess 2007: The Missing Manual
AuthorMatthew MacDonald
PublisherPogue Press
Price$3499
AvailableUsually ships in 24 hours
Description
Compared to industrial-strength database products such as Microsoft's SQL Server, Access is a breeze to use. It runs on PCs rather than servers and is ideal for small- to mid-sized businesses and households. But Access is still intimidating to learn. It doesn't help that each new version crammed in yet another set of features; so many, in fact, that even the pros don't know where to find them all. Access 2007 breaks this pattern with some of the most dramatic changes users have seen since Office 95. Most obvious is the thoroughly redesigned user interface, with its tabbed toolbar (or "Ribbon") that makes features easy to locate and use. The features list also includes several long-awaited changes. One thing that hasn't improved is Microsoft's documentation. To learn the ins and outs of all the features in Access 2007, Microsoft merely offers online help.

Access 2007: The Missing Manual was written from the ground up for this redesigned application. You will learn how to design complete databases, maintain them, search for valuable nuggets of information, and build attractive forms for quick-and-easy data entry. You'll even delve into the black art of Access programming (including macros and Visual Basic), and pick up valuable tricks and techniques to automate common tasks -- even if you've never touched a line of code before. You will also learn all about the new prebuilt databases you can customize to fit your needs, and how the new complex data feature will simplify your life. With plenty of downloadable examples, this objective and witty book will turn an Access neophyte into a true master.

Gold Standard

Can you believe that a liberal rag like the New York Times has a staff of techies that can write like real folks? They make this new (complete rewrite) Access crystal clear with many insights on how to take advantage of the new features. Professional MS Office lecturers at conferences I attend use the Missing Manual series to prep.

Good project book
Review DateF2009-05-10  RatingF
This book has been invaluable in the completion of organizational and personal projects with Access 2007. Explanations are easily located for reference during actual programming. Examples and exercises are good learning tools. Use of "'s" contraction gets a little monotonous. Although usable as is, discussing Forms either right after Tables or right after Queries might have been more efficient for someone starting a project.

Easy to Understand
Review DateF2009-04-20  RatingF
I had originally purchased the Special Edition of Using Microsoft Office Access 2007 because the updated version of Access was significantly different than 2003. Might just as well being reading a foreign language upside down. Although I am not a novice user of MS Office applications, I found this book to be written for regular people including beginners, not technicians. It was easy to find answers to my questions and guidance for operations I was not sure of. I am constructing a new database and I would definitely recommend this series of manuals.

Much needed refererence
Review DateF2009-04-09  RatingF
It's too bad that Microsoft doesn't do something like this any more. The book is a good reference especially for those who have no knowledge of Access. For those individuals who have used Microsoft Access in earlier version, this provides need information on what has been changed and how to use it. It also gives the tips you need to make you work easier.

Very useful

I read several Access books. I believe this is one of the best. I learned many tricks.

This book has been extremely helpful while learning to use this program. Really takes you step by step through every single aspect of the program rather than leaving it up to you to fill in the blanks. Great for first time users.

Very basic manual, not good if you need detailed information
Review DateF2009-02-25  RatingF
This is a very basic manual, good if you are just beginning to learn the product, or have little training on it. I would not recommend it if you are wanting a book to help you write complex queries or create your own complex forms, reports, etc.

Much needed. I took a course (with no handouts). This book not only refreshed the memory and is a great reference, but also gave me some new tips.

Lots of issues ...
Review DateF2008-07-23  RatingF
I bought this book for the same reason I buy any "For Dummies" book, to decrease my ramp up time on a particular subject. Generally I can blow through one of these books in a few days and move on to more advanced books on that topic. Disappointingly, I was unable to achieve this goal with 'Access 2007 for Dummies'.

First of all this book starts out assuming that you have a database to work with and makes no effort in teaching you how to build a database from the ground up. Continuing on the assumption that you have your own database (filled with data) that you are going to be working with, the author has to stay in a "high level mode" for the rest of the book. Most of the book has vague references and examples that read something like "If you have X type of data in a Y type of structure you may want to try something like Z". Well, I don't have a my own database filled with this type of data, so, I went looking on the publishers web site for example databases to work with. I was happy when I found out there were example databases on the publishers site, but further disappointed to find out that these examples are rarely used. This makes following along by example next to impossible. The few times when these example databases are used they don't entirely match up to the screenshot's in the book . Which brings me to books use of screenshots. Screenshots are generally a good thing when working with a GUI application such Access. However, the screenshots are off little use due to the fact that the screenshots are of the entire application window, rather than being cropped to show you the control in question. So, when the author is referencing a specific control such as a small button you have to hunt and peck your way through the grayscale image trying to find the button that looks depressed.

After all of the fore mentioned pitfalls I still continued through the book. I was really interested in getting to the sections on charting and switchboarding. Once again, I was disappointed. The author claims that Access 2007 has no charting capability and the reader should use Excel or PowerPoint instead. First of all, this is incorrect. Charting is available in Access 2007 via the "Design View" in a report. Secondly, the author gives no instruction on how to create charts in Excel or PowerPoint as he advises the reader to do. The chapter on switchboards is all of 11 pages long (mostly screenshots) and contains next to no information on how to get these set up and working. As a matter of fact I could not get any of the switchboard examples to work properly with the example databases provided by the publisher.

In the end I ended up learning quite a bit about Access. However, most of what I learned was done with online research while trying to stumble through this book. Getting through this book took me about 4 times longer than it should have due to a the above mentioned problems. All and all this ended up being a waste of time for someone who was short on time in the first place.

Very helpful book.

I like the book. My Microsoft Applications class at college rushed through Access and I didn't understand it at all. This book really just makes everything simple and is full of helpful analogies.

"Microsoft Office Access 2007 Inside Out" is just that - everything you could ever need or want to know about this powerful tool. Extremely well-written and chock-full of tips and samples, this book has been, and will continue to be, an invaluable resource in broading my skills and knowledge about MS Access 2007. Access 2007 Inside Out
Review DateF2009-06-03  RatingF
Well-written walk-through of a lot of the basics and advanced features of Access 2007. The interspersed hints and tips do a good job at answering possible questions and introducing future content. Includes details on how to create server-sized applications. The additional content on the CD is a plus, especially the tables explaining each macro action (I have very little programming experience). The black-and-white pics are a little boring, but an overall good price for the 1300+ page book and the CD.

Excellent Access Book
Review DateF2009-05-27  RatingF
I recommend this book to any Access developer. The content as well as the CD are well worth the price and offer a plethora of information you can use to develop simple to complex databases.

Not a lot of Instruction
Review DateF2009-03-16  RatingF
This book has a whole lot on what you can do, but not a whole lot on how to do it! I would return it if I could.

Amazing Reference!
Review DateF2009-03-15  RatingF
This book took me from an absolute novice to a minimally competent access programmer in a week.

It is a well-prepared manual, and in conjunction with training materials and forums available from Microsoft online I'm not too worried about being able to do everything I want with my database!

The book has an excellent Visual Basic primer and serves as a good reference, but didn't offer the same when it came to SQL.
The training databases have served me well, in that I have been able to peek below the sheets to see what's going on and how they did it... which is helpful when my project doesn't parallel what the book talks about.
I haven't really found the CD useful yet, other than the fact that it contains the training databases.

This book is BY FAR the most PRACTICAL, USEFUL, and WORTH-THE-EXPENSE computer related publication I have EVER BOUGHT.
I'm already decent with Excel, but when I make my next complicated spreadsheet I see another Inside-Out purchase in my future!!!

Not like previous Step by Step series
Review DateF2009-04-19  RatingF
I teach Access at a local community college. In the past, I used the Access 2003 Step by Step and found it a good starting point. I should have looked at this book before I used it for my Access 2007 class. Not one page is devoted to relationships between tables. The only information is in the Glossary where it is defined as "An association between common fields in two or more tables." The reader is never told about Primary Keys, other than a mention to "notice the Primary Key icon ... to the left of the ShipperID field. The value in the Primary key field is used to uniquely identify each record." With this kind of detail, the publisher should have saved some trees.

The examples for importing from various other programs are so weak that they leave the reader with no real idea of what is involved in a real life situation.

Three people authored this book, yet not one of them ever thought to include the why of tasks, only the how.

Save your time and pass on this edition. Maybe the editors will look at the shoddy work, read some of the reviews, and find authors who understand Access and can communicate how the program is to be used.

Access Step by step
Review DateF2008-10-09  RatingF
This is a good book for someone who is starting and wants to create simple databases, which of course will never be used.

As someone wrote earlier, this book is for parrots or monkeys. It shows you to click buttons.

However, Databases are complex and this book is no help.

We need a better book, which explains the details and at the same time is lucid.

I found that book to be the Missing manual by Mathew Macdonald.

Don't waste your money on Step by step. You can get a much superior product for almost the same price of SBS.

I have been using Microsoft Access since the early 1990s, and I have been teaching it in the classroom and online for over a decade. I was a contract database developer for many years... so I know Access, and I'm no dummy.

This book is very well written and organized. Even though I have been working with Access for almost two decades now, I still sometimes find myself in need of a text book to reference information. I keep a copy of this book on the shelf at all times.

Minimal 2007 conversion details
Review DateF2009-05-15  RatingF
I purchased this book in main part because the description suggested that it addressed the 2007 changes in Access, including helpful information in upgrading to 2007. However, I felt that clearly was the not case. Yes, it contains typically found information that applies to the 2007 version, but is virtually absent real detail providing specific guidance on the problems and complexities that can be encountered in VBA, Ribbon use, and references when converting Access 2002/2003 up to 2007. No details regarding managing old toolbars converted to Add-in tabs. No details on which old VBA does not convert, or causes predictable conflicts. No details on reference conflicts that can cause immediate problems. I expected more from four professional Access developers. Having now converted Access databases, I've found multiple code differences that could have been brought to my attention that would have saved me subtantial trial and error time loss. Should I have expected more conversion information detail? Normally when going from one version to another, I would find it helpful but not critically important. However, because of the huge impact of Microsoft's new user interface, as well as VBA changes - and their impact on existing prior-version databases - conversion detail would be extremely valuable. So only based on this targeted expectation from this book, I would not recommend it over any other Access book - with regards to usefulness in dealing with conversion problems and complexities.

I have definitely come to respect the Wrox writers. Whenever I am in need of additional assistance, I look to these books first. The Access 2007 VBA Programmers Guide has everything I need in it and is written in an easy to follow manner. My skill level is just above beginner, but there are sections of the book for more advanced programming that I have not looked at. I highly recommend all books by Wrox (I have used their SharePoint books extensively).

Excellent!

This books was a TREMENDOUS help in writing a Human Resources application for my company. I'm no programmer--but this book helped me a great deal with some of the VB that was needed for the database. I did also rely on the internet a lot but this was a handy tool that covered a majority of the basics--the internet was for more advanced scripting. I highly recommend the book for those who work with Access often...and even for those who want to take advantage of the cool things code will enable you to do.

Great Resource for ANYONE working with Access
Review DateF2008-03-18  RatingF
Access 2007 VBA is a great book for experienced and novice programmers alike. It is thoroughly detailed and yet covers the VBA basics at the beginning. What I like about this book is that it covers details that other books seem to always miss. This would include Microsoft Office integration. Or, in other words, the code that lets you work with other Office applications like manipulating Excel from Access or Word from Access. It also goes into working with Outlook and even SharePoint, which are two of the hardest to find information on when working with Access VBA. I am finding this book to be a great addition to my library and I believe you will too.

Java Persistence with Hibernate

TitleJava Persistence with Hibernate
AuthorChristian Bauer,Gavin King
PublisherManning Publications
Price$5999
AvailableUsually ships in 24 hours
Description
Java Persistence with Hibernate is considerably more than simply a second edition to Hibernate in Action. It provides a comprehensive overview of all the capabilities of the Java Persistence API in addition to those of Hibernate 3, as well as a detailed comparative analysis of the two. It describes how Hibernate has been used to implement the Java Persistence standard, and how to leverage the Hibernate extensions to Java Persistence.

-- From the Forward by LINDA DEMICHIEL Specification Lead, Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0 and Java Persistence Sun Microsystems

Persistence, the ability of data to outlive an instance of a program, is central to modern applications. Hibernate, the most popular Java persistence tool, provides automatic and transparent object/relational mapping so it's a snap to work with SQL databases in Java applications. Hibernate conforms to the new EJB 3.0 and Java Persistence 1.0 standards.

Java Persistence with Hibernate explores Hibernate by developing an application that ties together hundreds of individual examples. You'll immediately dig into the rich programming model of Hibernate 3.2 and Java Persistence, working through queries, fetching strategies, caching, transactions, conversations, and more. You'll also appreciate the well-illustrated discussion of best practices in database design, object/relational mapping, and optimization techniques.

In this 2nd edition of Manning's bestselling Hibernate in Action, authors Christian Bauer and Gavin King -- the founder of the Hibernate project -- cover Hibernate 3.2 in detail along with the EJB 3.0 and Java Persistence 1.0 standards.

What's Inside:

--Authoritative source for any developer using Java with SQL databases.
--Covers the latest major Hibernate version in great detail
--Explores the new EJB 3.0 Java Persistence standard.
--Written by the Hibernate founder and project lead.
--Object/relational mapping concepts
--Real-world tasks and examples
--Application design and development processes with ORM

a MUST_READ book for any web programmer

This book is not only a fantastic guide to Hibernate - it is actually an amazing treatise on two very important concepts: ORM and Domain-Driven Models. I strongly recommend reading this book. Even if you are not directly interested in Hibernate, it will broaden your understanding of object design and persistence.

If you can only buy 1 book on Hibernate, this is the one to buy. It's comprehensive and well written. Be prepared to read actively as it can drift into the weeds a little bit, but there is nothing else that goes into Hibernate at the same level of detail on the market, good stuff.

Simply great!

Using this book for an online course; I think all the steps in the tutorials are very clearly explained, lots of screen shots are very helpful, no complaints so far. I am very pleased with this style of self-learning offered through this book and accompanying files (downloaded)

Overpriced textbook, not a very good reference or how-to
Review DateF2009-03-24  RatingF
This book is obscenely overpriced for the content. I bought this book because it was required for a MS Access class. When this class is over, I will probably never open this book again. It does a very good job in walking you through the steps needed to complete each assignment and tutorial. However it does very little in explaining what is going on in each step.

For example, "To modify the calculated controls and their attached labels: step 9 - ... set the Tab Stop to No, set the ControlTip Text propery to Calculated total number of invoices for this contract..." (pg312). To this day, I have no idea why I had to do that.

When it comes time to design or modify a real database that is set up differently than the examples, you will have trouble figuring out what is going on.

Also, there is no disc included with the practice databases you will need. Unless your teacher provides them to you, you will have to download them from the web. Have fun with that if you have a slow connection.

I have a hard time understanding many to many relationships. It's probably the most complicated concepts in database design. However the book only spent 7 1/2 pages (and 1 simple example) on it. So I still don't understand it well.

Don't get this book if you don't have to. It will help you get through a MS Access class, but it is a poor reference book.

I would recomend Access 2007: The Missing Manual by Matthew MacDonald instead. The Missing Manual focuses on basic design and understanding overall database concepts.

Editor needed!
Review DateF2009-05-31  RatingF
Authors know their stuff, but you'll have a hard time learning it since it looks like it was written without an editor. Typos, missing exampes, and passages repeated word for word within a few paragraphs are more than off-putting. They really hinder comprehension for someone trying to learn this material. Knowledgeable readers can probably figure out what the authors meant to say from the context of the discussion, but beginners will be completely lost. As one of the latter, I found it a complete waste of money.

A Waste of Time

I have used books such as this to teach myself how to use much more complicated software (such as Visual C++ 6) with great success to the point of selling my own software developed with Visual C++. I have dabbled in earlier versions of Access and bought this book to upgrade my skills and get productive quickly with Access 2007. Not a hope! The book is poorly proof read and has many errors. Old versions of text rewritten, presumably to improve clarity, are left in place, thus adding to confusion. The book is just poorly and carelessly written making learning very difficult for someone struggling to understand new concepts. The examples on the CD don't always match the text, don't always work and often add to the difficulty of understanding.

This one goes into the recycling!

Summary Review of Access 2007 Books
Review DateF2008-03-22  RatingF
This is the summary review of four Access 2007 books:
"Special Edition: Using Access 2007" (Special)
"Access 2007 Bible" (Bible)
"The missing Manual of Access 2007" (Manual)
"Access 2007 for dummies" (Dummies)

In sum, the special edition is the best. Buy the special edition. Even you are a fresh beginner on Access.

(My story? Well, I read the dummies first. Then looked at Manual, doesn't like it. So I got the bible. Still unsatisfied. Finally, I got the special edition.)I know some basics on Access 2003 and only use Access when Excel is not enough to handle my data. I started with "Access 2007 for dummies" and finished it in a couple of hours. Then I turned to "Access 2007 Bible" and "The missing Manual", the manual is the worst one and the bible just provides basics, well, maybe a bit more than, that the dummies book already covers.

The special edition provides more examples and detailed explanation on: Query, Forms, Reports, Pivot table. Not sure about the VBA part.

I also like very much the reader-friendly layout and enjoy its "what is in real world" sections at the end of several chapters.

This book also provides a good summary of basic database concepts like normalized, the importance of index, joints. The summary is very helpful especially you are a beginner.

The cover of the special edition claims that the special edition is the only Access book you need. Well, maybe not the only one, but if you have the special edition, you definitely don't need the Access 2007 Bible, The missing manual and the dummies book.

Only for the experienced

This book is not for the novice user. I know a little about programming and am barely able to stumble through the programming sections. An example is the scope of variables. I'm familiar with most variable types but not "static". All others are defined (public, private, dim, etc) but not static. There is mention of static but little real information.

This was written when the product was in beta test and it shows. The examples seem to be of screen shots and the type size is about 4 point. Better have a magnifing glass to read. There are many typos and the explanation of a sub may not always follow the example.

Both the experienced user and the novice would be better served by another book.

While embarking on my first project I purchased this book in hopes that it would guide my way; Wrong! Granted, this initial foray into Access was complicated (building an enormous master parts database and a large array of tools), but the methodology of the book was little or no help at all. When I did have a specific question the book was lacking in its explanation. Luckily for me one of my co-workers was very well versed in Access. I intend to hang on to the book and keep trying as it has received some excellent reviews by persons with much more database experience than myself - perhaps it can redeem itself. If it does I will gladly print a retract.

Not worth it

I am not an extreme power user of Access but I use it everyday and maybe build a query or two every week. However, I find this book so hard to use and not very efficient. It never really comes out and TEACHES you anything--most of it is just fluff. If you wanted to learn how to build a very simple table and build really simple queries, it could probably help you do that but so could most Access websites or just a good co-worker. But if you have ANY questions that go outside of that box, like how to add grouping, sums, totals (things people really need when looking at huge tables) or if you wanted to use a formula/create criteria/build something a little more "complicated", this is not the book for you. I think you would be better off using a book that can show you a few things. I imagine most people buy this book to get some of the basics but also get something they could use as a reference guide when you get stuck--
If you're like me and you do get stuck, you might not find the answers you are looking for in here.

Mediocre introduction to Access

The major drawbacks to this book are 1)too much "chat" -- non essential verbage that doesn't contribute to the understanding of Access, 2)It talks about some features that are possible but doesn't explain how to use them -- it would have been better to not even mention them as it just led to frustration on my part as a new Access user

very pleased

The author is great. He is comical as he explains important details.

Good but not as advanced as I needed

This book is very introductory. If you need more than the basics I wouldn't suggest this book.
