YOU: Being Beautiful: The Owner's Manual to Inner and Outer Beauty

TitleYOU: Being Beautiful: The Owner's Manual to Inner and Outer Beauty
AuthorMichael F. Roizen,Mehmet C. Oz
PublisherFree Press
Price$2699
AvailableUsually ships in 24 hours
Description
Most people think that beauty revolves around such things as lipstick, sweet eyes, or skinny jeans -- all those things that we can see (and obsess over) in the mirror. But the fact is that beauty isn't some superficial pursuit, and it's not some random act that you can thank (or curse) your ancestors for.

There are, in fact, scientific standards to beauty. Beauty is purposeful, because it's how humans have historically communicated who we are to potential mates. Beauty, in fact, is really about your health and happiness.

In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Michael F. Roizen and Dr. Mehmet C. Oz bust the myths and stereotypes about the way we view ourselves -- and how we define beauty. In these pages, you'll find out why beauty isn't as much about your vanity as it is about your humanity. The doctors take a scientific, informative, and entertaining look at the three levels of beauty and explain how they all work together to form a complete and authentic YOU. Those three levels of beauty are:

  • Looking Beautiful: Your appearance influences your self-esteem and has major health implications. Here, the docs will tell you how you can look the way you want.
  • Feeling Beautiful: So what if you have luscious lips or gorgeous locks if your joints creak and you have the energy of a rug? The docs will tell you how to improve your energy levels, beat back your life-altering aches and pains, and come to grips with some of life's toughest stresses.
  • Being Beautiful: By improving your relationships with your loved ones as well as with others, you'll be well on your way to finding true happiness. That's the ultimate goal: Having all three levels of beauty working together so you can have a happy and healthy life.

You'll start off by taking the ultra-revealing and validated YOU-Q Test to help you assess where you are on your own beauty scale and where you want to be. Take the test, see how well you do; then use the book to help you improve your score.

With their usual candor and honesty, Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz break down the mechanics of beauty and explain how little adjustments in your routine can help you become a happier, healthier person. You will learn about the biology of beauty, take YOU Tests to determine where you are on the beauty scale, get tons of YOU Tips to help you improve your life, as well as learn the secrets of the Ultimate Beautiful Day.

From hair to toenails, Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz go through every part of your body to explain how different foods, vitamins, creams, gels, and injections can really boost your looks. They scrutinize the beauty myths that bombard us every day and offer an unbiased perspective on which ones cause more harm than good. You will be able to revamp your beauty regimen (or start a new one from scratch). They'll also take a close look at chronic pain, mood swings, low energy, and financial stresses. And they'll dive into the science of building relationships, finding happiness, and using spirituality to help you define your own levels of true beauty.

Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz act as tour guides navigating the tricky but exciting terrain of today's beauty industry. YOU: Being Beautiful is your all-inclusive ticket into the world -- the real world -- of beauty.

Beauty Means Vitality

I enjoyed reading "You: Being Beautiful" because its message emphasizes how health and beauty are connected and we need to keep reinforcing this message. The quizzes, quips and quality advice make this a good springboard for building status and affiliation with others. This book covers a lot of terrain which makes it a bit broad, but it meshes well with my own book,Addicted to Stress: A Woman's 7 Step Program to Reclaim Joy and Spontaneity in Life where I provide a specific proven program for women who want behavior changing steps that they can process and control themselves to harness their power and turn all that stress into strength. Stress will always land on your doorstep, but you don't have to constantly open the door

What is real Beauty? Roizen and Oz tell us in clear direct ways.
I found this book great to combine with the Yale University doctor's book: Ayurveda: A Comprehensive Guide To Traditional Indian Medicine for the West. In that book, Dr. Frank John Ninivaggi MD adds the Eastern perspective to understanding and creating wellness in body, mind, and spirit. Wow! two superb works by medical doctors.

I'M RECOMMENDING IT TO MY CLIENTS

I was a little skeptical of a book written for women by men, however these guys are really knowledgeable and straight forward in their advice and that's what got my attention. I especially appreciated the part where they talk about how your appearance influences ones self-esteem. I've seen this in my therapy clients --- and the authors give advice on how you can feel much better about yourself. No matter your age, the key is to feel beautiful by taking healthy steps to achieve that feeling --- and anyone can do it --- beauty or not! This book covers a lot of topics that women will appreciate despite the fact that the authors are men! Pamela D. Feeling beautiful already
Review DateF2008-11-12  RatingF
I'm a fan of the authors and have read all of their books. What I enjoyed most about You: Being Beautiful is that it targets beauty from three essential angles. They show you how to look beautiful, feel beautiful, and even BE beautiful. As you might expect, they offer a ton of test and tips to help you work on all your beauty areas from your hair, to your skin, your teeth, and so on.

They also take the time to consider beauty as a mental element of a person, both from the pyschological image you have of yourself to keeping stress down and other things in life that are as harmful to your mind as they are to your body. It's a holistic approach that really does leave you feeling as beautiful as you are bound to look after following their tips!

Another book I strongly recommend because I've enjoyed it immensely and have made some major changes since reading it (a healthy mind is a beautiful mind) is The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book

Looking, Feeling, and Being Beautiful
Review DateF2008-11-11  RatingF
"Most people think that beauty revolves around such things as lipstick, sweet eyes, or skinny jeans--all these things that we can see (and obsess over) in the mirror. But the fact is that beauty isn't some superficial pursuit, and it's not some random act that you can thank (or curse) your ancestors for" -- from inner flap of the book.

In "YOU: Being Beautiful" the two doctors discuss "the scientific standards to beauty." They divide them into three levels of beauty:

1. Looking Beautiful. The manes says it all - the authors tell you what to do to look the way you want. That includes:
- taking care of your skin -- how to keep it young and smooth, how to protect it, what to do with acne, eczema, etc.
- taking care of your hair -- proper hair care, hair abuse, hair loss, etc.
- taking care of your mouth -- lips, teeth, gums, bad breath, and more...
- taking care of your hands, feet, nails...
- assuring the proper body shape. (They devoted one of their previous books, "YOU on a diet," to that subject. )

2. Feeling Beautiful. This part of the book is divided into chapters discussing:

- energy levels, and energy crisis resulting from viruses and infections, hormonal imbalances, sleep problems
- aches and pains -- back pain and its relation to the spine and muscles; headache (migraine headache, tension headache, cluster headache); female pains; etc.
- emotional distress

3. Being Beautiful. Love is the biggest beauty boost! We need emotional connection with other people to fill happy. Beauty is the reflection of happiness. The doctors discuss the biology of attraction and love, and the biology of sex life in men and women. They name and talk about the Six Paths to Happiness:

- being positive and generous
- feeling empathy
- finding authenticity
- embracing emotion
- exploring spirituality
- understanding unhappiness

The book ends with "The Be-YOU-tiful Plan for Living the Ultimate Beautiful Day" and other strategies for becoming beautiful.

I think this book is on the level of the authors previous book You: Staying Young: The Owner's Manual for Extending Your Warranty (You) which in my opinion is good enough for four stars. However, I think that some ideas (taking care of spine; obesity; internal body hygiene) are better explained in Your Body Maintenance Handbook, which I highly recommend as an addition to this book.

I have a couple other Kindle guides and find this one to be the best! I have come to find that Kindles are not just for reading books. There are so many more uses that most people aren't aware of. The Kindle Cookbook has all the "ingredients" for these additional uses. This is a must for Kindle users!

Great book for anyone with a new Kindle or if you haven't had time to figure out how to use your wonderful Kindle yet.

There is so much great information in an easy to use format on this ebook. Even though Amazon includes an instruction manual, there are many more things to learn that Amazon didn't include.

If you want to get the most out of your Kindle, this book is a must have!

A must have for the kindle novice

I originally bought the kindle because I travel frequently and relished the thought of not carryinga bagful of books with me. I had no idea what the kindle was capable of until I read The Kindle Cookbook. The book is clear and concise and written for a general audience. If you really want to get the most out of your kindle this is a must have.

I discovered David Emberson's book from reading the Kindle Discussion Group forum. I was reading to try to discover all those tips and hints that savvy users might share. This book came highly recommended and I see why! All the information is right here! And David presents it in easy-to-understand steps. I would unreservedly say that this book should be required reading for new Kindle users... and many experienced users, too, I suspect. (Is that you on the cover, David?!)

The Complete User's Guide to the Amazing Amazon Kindle

I found this book to be interesting, helpful and an easy read. I purchased a "Kindle" and was looking for information to make my experience with the Kindle a good one. Steve's book not only met all my needs but he personally went the extra step to direct me to other helpful sites to help me in my own search to self-publish.

If you have purchased a "Kindle" and need a few pointers this is the book for you. And as an extra bonus you'll find some really good bargains inside.

Thank you Steve for a wonderful read.

Mr. Windwalker's enthusiasm for the Kindle shines through in the enthusiasm of his writing as well as in the range of tips, advice, and thoughts he provides on the Kindle.

Obviously, as with any book of this type, Kindle users will have discovered some or many of the ideas presented for themselves. However, even I, a true Kindle lover and gadget geek, mined valuable information that I had not discovered on my own. The tips range from the merely fun (how to find Minesweeper) to the extremely useful (where to find free content, keyboard shortcuts, how to use the Kindle during travel, how to manage photos and audio files).

To me, the most fun and interesting part of the book were the author's speculations on the possible future of the Kindle and how it might be a paradigm-changing device.

Everyone who owns a Kindle should also own this book.

great book. This book should be your first Kindle purchase.

Incredibly bad
Review DateF2008-11-20  RatingF
This guide fails at almost every level. It's incomplete (missing many instances, and no information on raids or heroic settings), it's horribly laid out and in some cases it's just wrong.

90% of the book really just feels like a file dump of a game manual. Lists of every skill (old and new) with nothing more then their icon and description for example. Thanks! I certainly can't get that in game by say... talking to any class trainer. Professions are even worse with the name, level and mats listed but not what the skill creates. Trying to decide which profession to level first? Hope you can figure it out based on names of the items alone.

The layout makes the book almost unreadable. The lisst of much of the loot tells you the stats and type, but not where it's worn. Some you can figure it out from the name ("Spaulders of..."), but come on. Beyond that the stats of an item are laid you as a sentence. Like this, "Leather. +40 AGI, +33 Critical, +32 Hit, +44 STAM" Just like that, line after line. Even incomplete the lists might have been useful if they were better laid out. As is, they are unreadable and useless.

I've only read parts, but even skimming I came across a blatant error. They seem to have confused the introductory quest lines for the Sholazar factions with the actual method for changing allegiance. Since this is like to be asked endlessly in chat you'd think they'd get that right at least.

The Dungeon Guides Brady did for WoW and TBC were very good. They suffered from a little of the bad loot layout, but they were accurate and readable. This guide is simply a rip off. It tells you almost nothing, is incomplete, hard to read, and simply wrong. Go to wowwiki or anywhere and print the pages out. You'll end up with a 100x better guide.

Seize him!

Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery (Voices That Matter)

TitlePresentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery (Voices That Matter)
AuthorGarr Reynolds
PublisherNew Riders Press
Price$2999
AvailableUsually ships in 24 hours
Description
Presentation designer and internationally acclaimed communications expert Garr Reynolds, creator of the most popular Web site on presentation design and delivery on the net -- presentationzen.com -- shares his experience in a provocative mix of illumination, inspiration, education, and guidance that will change the way you think about making presentations with PowerPoint or Keynote. Presentation Zen challenges the conventional wisdom of making "slide presentations" in today's world and encourages you to think differently and more creatively about the preparation, design, and delivery of your presentations. Garr shares lessons and perspectives that draw upon practical advice from the fields of communication and business. Combining solid principles of design with the tenets of Zen simplicity, this book will help you along the path to simpler, more effective presentations.

A stress-reliever
Review DateF2008-11-11  RatingF
A great compilation of basic and simple ideas about public presentation, yet fundamental ones. You may have read about these concepts already (e.g. Made to Stick, slide:ology), but Garr connects them nicely and the zen concept is not only refreshing, it helps alleviating the stress often assotiated with public speaking.

Excellent advice
Review DateF2008-11-02  RatingF
The book is its own best review. It is engaging, persuasive and memorable practicing what it preaches and giving a good presentation. The advice is a bit esoteric if you are looking for liniar, rational, step-by-step methodology and is obviously based much more on intuitive thought and art, but this is exactly what the author promised. The book does have sufficient building blocks and practical instructions to get started in the presentation process, but goes far beyond that in scope. The author does seem to capture the true intent of a presentation as being an opportunity to influence and persuade an audience rather than death by power point with data saturated slides. This is not a hold your hand, step-by-step guide to great presentaions. You can not be led to that level of performance. This book however does clearly point the way and encourage you to walk the path to giving great presentaions, but the reader still needs to do the walking.

Shakes my tired patterns!
Review DateF2008-10-30  RatingF
This book, recommended to me by a student of mine, gave me wonderfully fresh ways to look at my old and tired ways. I have walked away with some good techniques and ways of thinking.

A Valuable Approach to Presentation Design in a Digital and Information Rich Society
Review DateF2008-10-29  RatingF
Garr Reynolds is a former Manager of WW User Group Relations at Apple Computer, and is a currently a Marketing and Multimedia Presentation Design at Kansai Gaidai University in Japan.

In this "How-to" book, Presentation Zen, Garr offers a fresh teaching approach to presentation design. Garr organizes his book into three sections Preparation, Design and Delivery. Within these sections Garr stresses Clarity, Simplicity and Naturalness.

He cautions not to begin writing your presentation in PowerPoint, and instead to get out a notepad or scratch paper and jump into the creative process feet first. Imagine Shakespeare writing Romeo & Juliet in PowerPoint slides, it would have proved creatively impossible. Before digitizing your presentation, write it down on paper, yellow post-its, or a whiteboard. Generate a lot of ideas and then cut away the unnecessary information, then prioritize and organize your main points.

Garr also stresses not to "Data Dump" or simply paste entire excel sheets full of figures into a PowerPoint slide. Instead Garr asks readers to crunch the numbers first, consider the implications and wider relations and sum up the conclusion on each slide. He points out that the slide is not the place for you to walk the audience through a detailed walk through a process, that is better left to an actual printed document with deep explanation. Rather every slide should state a conclusion, a key takeway that the presenter can expand upon during the presentation.

A worthwhile investment to enhance your presentation skills.

Ignores fundamental realities of presentations
Review DateF2008-10-28  RatingF
This book is a good source of inspiration and ideas for slides, however, it overlooks key realities of many presentations. That is, most people create presentations that must stand on their own without the speaker because:

1) They are included in conference proceedings. Most conferences have multiple tracks. Unless your slides have sufficient content, then those who missed your presentation are SOL.
2) They are circulated among business colleagues for collaboration or information sharing
3) They are sales or marketing presentations that are typically left behind

These realities invalidate most of the principles of this book which recommends slides that are meaningless or content poor without the voice-over.

What's needed is a book steeped more in the realities of Powerpoint than in artistry.

The Digital Photography Book

TitleThe Digital Photography Book
AuthorScott Kelby
PublisherPeachpit Press
Price$1999
AvailableUsually ships in 24 hours
Description
Scott Kelby, the man who changed the "digital darkroom" forever with his groundbreaking, #1 bestselling, award-winning book The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers, now tackles the most important side of digital photography--how to take pro-quality shots using the same tricks today's top digital pros use (and it's easier than you'd think).

This entire book is written with a brilliant premise, and herefs how Scott describes it: "If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, 'Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?' I wouldn't stand there and give you a lecture about aperture, exposure, and depth of field. In real life, I'd just say, 'Get out your telephoto lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.' You d say, 'OK,' and you'd get the shot. That's what this book is all about. A book of you and I shooting, and I answer the questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I've learned just like I would with a friend, without all the technical explanations and without all the techno-photo-speak."

This isn't a book of theory|it isn't full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts: this is a book of which button to push, which setting to use, when to use them, and nearly two hundred of the most closely guarded photographic "tricks of the trade" to get you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos with your digital camera every time you press the shutter button.

Here's another thing that makes this book different: each page covers just one trick, just one single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you'll learn another pro setting, another pro tool, another pro trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. There's never been a book like it, and if you're tired of taking shots that look "OK," and if youfre tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, "Why don't my shots look like that?" then this is the book for you.

Good for beginners
Review DateF2008-11-19  RatingF
This is a great book for beginners or some one moving from a point and shoot camera to a DSLR. The layout and content are great but if you have some experience either through a photography class high school or other you'll likely not find something you didn't already know.

Great book for beginners who want to cut to the chase.
Review DateF2008-11-17  RatingF
I saw this book at Barnes and Noble looking for a good book to help me get sharper pictures (which has been my vice.) Coming across this book, I flipped a couple of pages and was sold - I put down the big heavy technical book I was holding and went straight to the register. And I was not sorry that I bought this book, either.

Sure, there is the thing about his humor. I could care less most of the time, except that the beginning is weighed down by him trying to explain to you in detail how the book works, and spending an exorbitant amount of time taking pride over the titles of the first few pages. I learned my lesson - I skipped the intros and went to what I needed.

Already, the first day reading, I was excited and ready to run out and take professional looking photos, I was so encouraged. (It was night time, however, and the irony is he doesn't cover night time photography in his book. Not this one, at least. I can't say for the second book.) I've experimented on my cat and the flowers in my garden and already I can see a difference in my photography. Not only that, but even though this isn't a technical book, I have a much better understanding of my camera!

What I love best about this book (and what truly sold me on it) was the last chapter about "photo recipes". He tells you exactly the environment he was in in order to get the shot, the camera setting, what number to set aperture size or shutter speed (things I had not gotten the hang of yet, so it HELPS), and what equipment he used. The book may be short (just over 200 pages), but it's straight to the point, so you don't need to swim through the technical aspect of things. His examples are beautiful works of art and he even gives us a peek into his bag to see what he brings on shoots. I've also kept in mind some equipment recommendations.

All in all, yeah his sense of humor is a little much, but it's a wonderful glimpse for the amateur photographer as to how to pros work.

Incredibly helpful beginner photography book

This allows digital photographers of any skill level to jump right in using Lightroom like a pro from the very start, sidestepping a lot of the frustrations that typically haunt those unfamiliar with new applicationscespecially those as powerful as Lightroom.

What really sets The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers apart from other Lightroom books on the market are the last two bonus chapters where Scott answers the questions, "In exactly what order am I supposed to do things in Lightoom," and "Where does Photoshop fit in to the mix?" Both chapters start with an on-location photo shoot, including full details on the equipment, camera settings, and lighting techniques. Readers then witness as he takes the photos from each shoot through the entire workflow process, to the final output of the 16"x20" prints. And, because he incorporates Photoshop seamlessly right into this workflow, you'll learn some of the latest Photoshop techniques for portrait and landscape photography as well.

If you're one of those people who learns best by actually doing the projects yourself; who learns best without all the complicated technical explanations and confusing jargon, and if you really want to start using Lightroom today to unlock the productivity secrets of "The new digital photography workflow,"---there is no faster, more "straight-to-the-point" or more fun way to learn than this groundbreaking new book, and you are absolutely going to love it!|

Scott Kelby writes easy-to-apply instructions for all things Lightroom in this book. Makes my job MUCH easier!

New to Lightroom 2? You'll like this!
Review DateF2008-11-15  RatingF
I really like this guide, there are so many little details that are unfolded in this book. I like Scott's goofy humor it's right up my alley.

The layout is nice if you follow his instructions to start at the beginning and read it through, if you skip around you may lose some details.
Yes, you can use it as a reference but Scott has a direction he wants you to use.

I would highly recommend this if your new to Lightroom 2, it will save you time and help you gain some great understanding.

Scott made e-mailing from Lr so easy with my Mac, the masking/sharpening technique was an excellent, I use it frequently with portrait work. Theses are just a couple of great things in this guide.

You can't go wrong with this guide, I highly recommend it to new, intermediate and experienced users.

Lightroom 2 rocks!

Scott Kelby has done it again.
In The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers, Scott Kelby uses photos from some of his professional photoshoots as examples to take the reader step by step through organizing, developing, and printing your digital photographs. Along the way he points out all of the hidden secrets and nuances that make Lightroom 2 such a powerful package. Things most of us could never discover on our own were we to purchase and use Lightroom 2 without Scott's help.
Because, among other things, Lightroom 2 is a workflow program Scott recommends readers do not "jump around" in the book, but rather, start at the beginning and work right through chapter by chapter. Since it is a 419 page tutorial this seems a little daunting, but believe me, it is well worth the effort.
If you are a digital photographer, whether professional or amateur, and want to use Lightroom 2; do yourself a favor and purchase Scott Kelby's excellent book.
You won't be disappointed.

Another great book from Scott Kelby

Quickest way to get up and running in Lightroom 2
Review DateF2008-11-04  RatingF
I had never used Lightroom before in my life.. I wasn't even sure what all it COULD do. I just knew that a lot of people recommended it so I thought I'd give it a try. I installed the software and then stared at it blankly. I had no clue where to begin. I clicked a few buttons but got really lost really fast. I began to wonder if I'd wasted my money. But luckily I'd also picked up Scott Kelby's book. :)

First of all i LOVE Scott's humor. I love "mental breaks" and always get a chuckle out of his chapter introductions. I read the intro to the book which recommends downloading a video, and his sample files so you can follow along. I think some of the chapter 4 pictures may be mis-filed under chapter 5 though so if you can't find a picture, check another chapter file.

So I stayed up past 1am the first night going through the first 5 chapters. I was hooked and amazed! His book was easy to follow and really got me excited about what this program can do. The first 3 chapters or so are all about organization. A part of me wanted to skip this part, but i didn't.. it's worth a read. It's amazing what they've built into this.. much different than the organizer used in Photoshop Elements. It has ways to compare photos side by side, or show a before and after edits... very cool stuff! Finally I got to the first chapter on developing photos. Good stuff.

I'm only half way through the book, but at least I'm up and running. I know enough to be dangerous. :) Enough to be excited and in love with Lightroom! I love that he even showed you the settings to get that trendy gritty look in your photographs!

I haven't looked at any other Lightroom books but if you're new to Lightroom I can attest that this book is fantastic. it'll teach you step by step the proper workflow to maximize your use of Lightroom! So hurry up and hit that Buy button! :)

Just purchased this book & find that it almost gives a full explanation. I am not sure if it is me or the book or OS X. Possibly a little bit of all. So many changes have been made by this time that I am not sure the book is able to be completely accurate.

Obviously a tremendous amount of work has gone into the book!

Just changed over to Apple after years of PCs. Quite a shock for an old dog to learn new tricks, but the Missing Manual books have made the change much less traumatic. I have found the Missing Manuals to be well written, easily understood, and a great help in mastering a new system.

I've relied on David Pogue to guide me through the ins and outs of Mac OSs since long before
they named them after wild felines. I've seldom come away from an index without locating the
subject I was looking for. He's at his best with the Leopard book. If you buy or upgrade to this

Description
No matter where you are on the organizational ladder, the odds are high that you've delivered a high-stakes presentation to your peers, your boss, your customers, or the general public. Presentation software is one of the few tools that requires professionals to think visually on an almost daily basis. But unlike verbal skills, effective visual expression is not easy, natural, or actively taught in schools or business training programs. slide:ology fills that void.

Written by Nancy Duarte, President and CEO of Duarte Design, the firm that created the presentation for Al Gore's Oscar-winning film, An Inconvenient Truth, this book is full of practical approaches to visual story development that can be applied by anyone. The book combines conceptual thinking and inspirational design, with insightful case studies from the world's leading brands. With slide:ology you'll learn to:

  • Connect with specific audiences
  • Turn ideas into informative graphics
  • Use sketching and diagramming techniques effectively
  • Create graphics that enable audiences to process information easily
  • Develop truly influential presentations
  • Utilize presentation technology to your advantage

Millions of presentations and billions of slides have been produced -- and most of them miss the mark. slide:ology will challenge your traditional approach to creating slides by teaching you how to be a visual thinker. And it will help your career by creating momentum for your cause.

Do Presentations the Right Way: To Share Ideas
Review DateF2008-11-13  RatingF
Nancy Duarte, author of slide:ology: The Art and Science of Creating Great Presentations has a wealth of resources on her Web site including articles, a blog, and extended content from her book. She cleverly adds a www symbol on some pages in the book. This sends a signal to check the book's companion site for extended content.

This great approach works well because it's visual with the green www taking little space. Thus, you don't feel like the book wastes any space to point you away from the book's pages. Some people don't care to go online -- they want their entire book within the book's pages. So it won't bother this audience.

A useful book companion site also helps market the book to those who don't have it. If they like what they see, they'll want the rest of it. Smart authors balance the print and online resource to avoid taking away from the experience of the print edition and providing bonus material that would not work in the book (videos of the presentation and downloadable PowerPoint files) while giving just enough information to those who don't own the book... yet.

Duarte refers to Sky McCloud's dynamic presentation containing 200 slides that she shows in eight minutes. Her book site includes her full presentation -- which you can't capture in the book. As a deaf person, I couldn't hear what she said. That girl's slides captivate me the whole time as they almost tell a story on their own.

What I like about these PowerPoint files is the site shows them like a movie. It also helps to watch the presentation in full first and then download the file to see its individual slides and how to make it work. Duarte provides the links referenced in the book so readers can click instead of type them.

The slick and colorful book shows how to create effective, intriguing, and visual presentations from the beginning of the process where you ask questions to know your audience better. It works through finding inspiration and coming up with the initial ideas and design.

slide:ology helps those who know all the tricks of PowerPoint, but struggle with the visual aspects of the presentation -- the art and design part. That's me. I'm a right-brain thinker who tells it like it is.

I struggle when it comes to creating and showing my thoughts with visuals. It's like when I tried to be a web designer. I knew how to do HTML, CSS, and create a site. But it was flat, lifeless, and boring.

This book blends PowerPoint and information visualization. Such visuals help tell the story. So the book covers space, typography, delivery, diagrams, color, animation, design value, and more.

This won't teach you how to use PowerPoint. Plenty of books covering that exist already. Instead, Duarte focuses on helping you tell your story in a dramatic and visually appealing way. You won't have to resort to clich images anymore.

Case studies appear throughout the book between creativity and design discussions. Some zoom in on a specific feature of a real presentation while others share expertise from talented speakers and executives of organizations ranging from Cisco to a church pastor.

After reading slide:ology, I believe I can step up my presentations from a design perspective. I'm a pro when it comes to text, but visuals... kaput. Since I can easily create charts, it won't take much to make them more effective with the tips from the book. I'm in no hurry to do a presentation and test out what I've learned.

The book is easy to read and reference as it uses a lot of pictures and slides. Although a lot of the text uses too small of a font size -- very surprising considering the discussion on font size.

100% practical!
Review DateF2008-11-11  RatingF
The book is so packed with practical and pragmatic tips, it's usefull as soon as you open it. Great format to keep browsing through to find inspiration and check how you are doing on your slide deck while you work on it. Thanks for sharing the results of so many years of experience and expertise, Nancy!

Powerpoint sucks. However, it's pretty tough to _not_ include a Powerpoint presentation if you're trying to convince someone that's used to Powerpoint. Slide:ology leaves irritating presentations behind.

If you are finding an advanced book for presentation skills and slide design, you should love this one!

If you are finding a cookbook or a step-by-step instruction of how to build a powerpoint, you should not read this!

It is for advanced learner who really want to put design into presentation and slideshow. It is about a style and art rather than a production of a presentation file.

I recommend you reading this with these two...

New to Apple's Developer Tools? This book is not for you!
Review DateF2008-11-18  RatingF
The book states it is aimed "squarely at anyone just getting started with iPhone programming." It is not.

At the time of purchase, I was a brand new iPhone developer with zero exposure to Apple's developer tools and their iPhone SDK. That said, I am a very seasoned Java and C# developer, I have used Eclipse and VS.NET extensively for numerous years to build some very sophisticated applications. Apple's developer tools, XCode and Interface Builder, are radically different tools unlike either of these development environments. Instead of a singular IDE, the Apple tools are a hodgepodge of separate applications filling your screen with a plethora of small tool and inspector windows. If you are brand new to XCode and Interface Builder, this book simply doesn't have enough horse power to properly educate you on the pitfalls newbies will face.

If you are already familiar with Apple's developer tools, then the book may be better received by you then by someone who had no exposure to them.

As a newbie you need to realize a very, very important point: copying code out of a book and into XCode is simply not enough to get a demo working out of this or any iPhone developer book! The trick is knowing how to "link" within Interface Builder- how to establish what I now know to be IBAction and IBOutlet property decorators. The IB stands for "Interface Builder" and these two markers provide "hints" from XCode to Interface Builder. For example, to "link" a button from Interface Builder to a property in XCode, the @property would have to be properly decorated (with IBOutlet) and then you must physically establish the link in Interface Builder, using a control-click-drag metaphor from source to destination. To my point- therein lies the problem with "recipe" books like this one- unless you already have a grasp on this concept and how it works (which I didn't when I bought the book several weeks ago), this book will leave you very frustrated. You have verbatim code in XCode, but things don't work! Worse, you have no idea why. [bang head on desk repeatedly here]

My recommendation is to look at the forthcoming book from the guys over at Pragmatic Programmer- iPhone SDK Development I purchased their book, and while it still left me to figure out some holes and some of the Interface Builder nuances, it was much more targeted for someone who has never used any of Apple's developer tools. The Pragmatic book isn't a panacea for all newbie problems, but it is far better suited then this "recipe" book.

I'm confident (well, hoping) that as my iPhone developer experiences grow and I become more accustomed to Apple's developer tools, the recipes presented in this book might be of more value.

It is my opinion that its stated objective should have read "...squarely at anyone just getting started with iPhone programming who is already comfortable with the nuances of XCode, Interface Builder, and the other Apple developer tools."

Good and Bad
Review DateF2008-11-14  RatingF
I've been working through this book since it came out and had to write a review. I'll be short.

Pro's: This is one of the first, and for awhile only books on the iPhone SDK available. It is written in a friendly manner, and if you understand Xcode and Object Oriented Programming, you'll do OK.It does cover things more clearly than many of the code SDK snippet sites, and is often better organized.

Con's: Boy, this thing was PUSHED out the door. There are many errors in the book that you'll be able to fix yourself. Novices beware of keying in the examples. It may not be your typing that's causing the error. The level of detail in the book jumps from highly precise to woefully lacking. Often on the same page. Many concepts and terms are used without any attempt to explain them.

Make sure you download the code samples from the author web site (ericasadun.com) they have been updated, commented, and actually compile. However, they often mix bad practices, like not breaking out headers, or naming things clearly, in with the code.

At this point in time (2008), this is a very valuable book, because there are so few good references out there. The second edition needs to be much more solid, or it will quickly be eclipsed by other books coming onto the market.

Its ok, but I don't know.... there is a lack of explanations
Review DateF2008-11-13  RatingF
I'am not a begginer but I thought that some explanations should be there.
When explaining code I expected more detailed information, especially when using some classes for the first time in the book.
What I love in a book when I read it, is when the author mention some variations of his own code, or for example, I love when something like "by doing *** you would have ***" is written. Just a line, no code necessary.
But this book is just relating it's examples, which I think are too elementary.
When I looked at the sample code, everything was in main.m !
I think that instead of building 100s of small projects It would be more educational to develop a not so small project within some Lessons.
If I lost this book for any reason I would think twice about buying this book again.

Woefully thin
Review DateF2008-11-10  RatingF
While I can understand the considerable effort that may have gone into writing this book and compiling it's 100+ "recipes" for iPhone SDK development, this book ultimately falls flat and feels quite thin for the price.

Wait for a more comprehensive book that actually tackles some sample applications complex enough to warrant more than 1 source code file. This is really only quick examples of Cocoa Touch framework classes. Hardly worthy of the claim of being a cookbook.

Only for those with Objective C experience
Review DateF2008-11-09  RatingF
Somewhere in the description - preferably in bold upper case letters - it should say,

KNOWLEDGE of OBJECTIVE C IS A PRE-REQUISITE
