Excel Formula and Functions book
Review DateF2008-07-13  RatingF
This book does not give me the simple functions in a readable way like most of the books I have had from the "Dummies" group. I probably did myself in, however, by not understanding it better. I once had Excel for Dummies and it was a wonderful book and I may just have to order that. I used to work with Excel a lot and I inentionally forgot it when I retired. I am working with the City of Ukiah in a volunteer position tha trequires that i make up a couple of spread sheets and I need to re-train myself with Excel. Chas

Excellent! Complicated concepts presented in a simplest form :)

Just like the previous version, this much needed update to the new 2007 which is a totally new interface in office, is the clearest book there is if you know the basics of using excel but are new to formulas and functions, this book is the right start for beginners and those who aren`t good at maths..its explains formulas and functions as to what they do, where to locate them and how to set them up in the correct sequence without complicated language and uses practical useful and simple samples.

an easy intro to powerful calculation tools in excel.

If you are a dummy.....skip this!
Review DateF2007-10-12  RatingF
First, don't make a mistake with the Excel Books for Dummies. This book is about formulas & functions; it is NOT the original Excel for Dummies that demonstrates the fundamentals. This is for some serious formulating and functioning.

Second, if you can follow through and understand this book on formulas & functions, you may not be a dummy. A dummy would not understand book; it is clearly for the more advanced.

The book is black and white; no colorful graphics, there are few small icons through that identify a tip, warning, remember, and technical stuff. Periodically there are cartoons throughout the book.

The visuals of computer spreadsheets do help a little, but the view is light and often too small.

The book is divided into five sections, with several chapters within each section. Part 1 is Putting the Fun in Functions (I can't ever see fun with functions). Part II is counting On Your Money. Part III is Doing the Math, and this can get fairly advanced. Part IV is Working with Data (this is dates, time, database, etc.

This book consists of over 340 pages, and if you already have a great knowledge about formulas and functions, it may work for you. If you are a dummy, and require more visuals, forget this book. MzRizz

This is a well written and easy to follow guide to excel. Covers all the basics, but be warned that you have to have the actual program to use the CD. My workplace has the program on the office computers and when I got an office position I wanted to brush up on Excel before I transferred, but since Excel is an expensive program I didn't own it on my home pc. So the CD wasn't much use. Was able to study the text and get some useful pointers and tips on shortcuts tho.

Good Review of Formulas and Functions
Review DateF2007-12-02  RatingF
This book does a nice job on reviewing formulas and functions. It covers a lot of functions that other books gloss over or don't mention such as arrays, rounding, date/time functions etc.It spends a lot of time on logic and lookup functions. Best of all, it uses good business examples that help explain how to use the function. My big gripe with the book is that at times it skips details and just assumes the reader knows how to do something or understands why you would want to do something. Personally, I think the 2003 version explained details a little bit better however I still think that this is one of the better books out there for people wanting to use formulas and functions in a business environment. If you are looking for a book on solver and what-if however there are a lot better books out there.

An excellent buy for experienced users

The book provides insights regarding everyday functions, which you didn't know. The author explains each step thoroughly, however nothing can replace the knowledge you gain by trying it yourself. Nevertheless, its a very interesting book that helps you gain more solid knowledge about almost every formula in excel which you are already using or interested about.

Excel Formula Fixer

I have been teaching Excel and other Microsoft application for twelve-years, and I still found new information in this book.

The information is from the basic to the "WOW, Who thought of that?" Working with and calculating TIME and DATE functions has always been a pain....pain solved Chapter 10. Automated time cards are a breeze.

If you already know a lot about Excel, but don't use all the features everyday, then this book will help get started quicker when you need to use seldom used functions and create really robust formulas.

I was so proud of one very complex formula I almost had it tattooed to my leg.

Excellent and instantly usable information
Review DateF2007-01-01  RatingF
I consider myself an intermediate Excel user and amateur VBA programmer. However my knowledge of formulas and functions is lacking, so I purchased this book. Within the first few pages I was learning things about selecting ranges, paste special, etc that I didn't know before. The book explains many basic worksheet functions and also covers forms and controls, Analysis Toolpak functions, Lists, Advanced Filters, Subtotals, Solver and Goal Seek. Uses easy to understand examples to illustrate formula usage. It was able to explain Advanced Filter in a way I was finally able to understand. I'll have to read through the book again just to make sure I didn't miss anything, that's how much information was being conveyed. It does include some statistical functions and business modeling which was a bit advanced and isn't really much use to me, but overall it's an extremely helpful book. A great addition to anyone's Excel library and it will be at fingertip's reach for a long time to come.

A Warning Regarding the ODDL... and ODDF... Bond Functions
Review DateF2004-09-16  RatingF
I bought this book to get the definitions of the ODDF... and ODDL... bond functions used in Excel, as the mathematical definitions of both these functions and the parameters used in them, as given in the MS Excel 2000 Help topics, are missing a crucial 10% of the needed text. Unfortunately, there are major errors in concept in the discussion of the Excel ODDL... and ODDF... bond functions in this book (July 2004 printing). The author appears to have guessed at how these functions are to be used and at the meaning of certain parameters used by these functions, and guessed horribly wrong. He has communicated to me that any changes to be made will be made on release of the next edition. I have no reason to believe that any other material in the book is incorrect. (A rating was required for this warning to be submitted.)

So much better than online help!
Review DateF2004-07-26  RatingF
I got a copy of this book through a publisher I work with and think it's amazing. The author does a great job of making formulas and functions accessible and practical for the reader in a way that the online help is unable to do. Each description of a function comes with practical and interesting examples of how to apply what you've learned. This new series from Que is going to be a great addition to their lineup.

Description
Equipped with a variety of functions and easy to use, Microsoft Excel is the tool of choice when it comes to crunching numbers, building charts, and analyzing tables. But most users only scratch the surface of the program's functionality, especially the built-in formulas designed to make everyday operations and real-world tasks more efficient. Microsoft Excel Functions & Formulas demonstrates the secrets of Excel functions through the use of practical and useful examples in a quick reference format. Topics include logical, text, date and time, basic statistical, mathematical, financial, database, and reference functions as well as conditional formatting with formulas, array formulas, and user-defined functions.

Great reference - very thorough
Review DateF2008-03-31  RatingF
I've found this book to be a great reference to create simple to complex formulas and functions in Excel. The challenge to writing a book on this subject is that the application of the formulas in the book is done using "real-world examples" like Calculate Manpower for a project using the ROUNDUP function. This is great if, in your work, you need to Calculate Manpower needed to do a project. The difficulty comes when you need to apply the ROUNDUP function to your own projects.

My only other comment is that I wish the book had a different binding, like spiral binding so the itlays flat while you type a formula.

I love this book. I should have bought it years ago. Now I will never have to use the help function in Excel to figure out how to do something with a formula, ever again!

Top-notch Reference
Review DateF2006-03-20  RatingF
Though not a guru, I use Excel quite alot for business and personal purposes. I went through this book page-by-page, marking with post-its the formulas I'd be using. Though there was some more in-depth text manipulation missing, I will have this book handy whenever I embark on an Excel project.

Nice problem-solving reference...
Review DateF2005-11-20  RatingF
If you spend much time in Excel as part of your daily routine, you probably end up running across things you just don't know how to do. Joseph Rubin's latest book F1 Get The Most Out Of Excel Formulas And Functions might be a really good resource to bail you out when necessary...

Contents: Working With Formulas; Text; Date & Time; Lookup; Logical & Errors; Counting; Summing; List; Miscellaneous Calculation & Math; Income Tax & Financial; List of Functions; Index

There are a large number of "how to" items in this volume, formatted with the pattern of "Problem", "Solution", and "Explanation". Usually each of these are accompanied with a graphic that represents the spreadsheet and/or formula solution. The writing is tight and to the point, so there's not pages and pages of explanations on any single problem. It's a quick "get in, get out" type of tip that should point you in the right direction. I even found a solution to a spreadsheet issue I had (that I wasn't even looking to solve!). I have a spreadsheet that tracks my Amazon reviewer stats, and a couple of the columns show error statements for the blank lines because there are references to cells that aren't yet filled in. With one of these tips, I am now able to avoid that problem. Nice!

If you don't know Excel, then this book isn't going to teach it to you. But if you've conquered the basics and now want to do real work, this is a nice volume to keep on hand to help you around the minor roadblocks you'll be sure to encounter...

This reference manual describes all the "FUNCTIONS" that you can use in Excel. If you want to learn WHAT A FUNCTION IS, this reference will tell you. If you want to know what Families of Functions EXIST in Excel, this reference organizes the functions into families ( Database, Date/Time, DDE & External, Engineering, Financial, Information, Logical, Lookup/Reference, Match & Trig, Statistical and Text Functions), and then lists and describes the details of every one of them.If you ALREADY KNOW WHAT that you need to use an Excel function, this reference will tell you HOW to use it. This is the dictionary of Excel Functions which are the heart of Excel. This is one of those rare books ( like a dictionary ) that is not diminished by the lack of an index. The table of contents lets you find everything.

Review DateF2002-12-11  RatingF
This book is just the kind of product that we have to come to expect from DK Publishing Group - full of rich graphics and colors. The book has been written for Excel 2000, and not XP. Nevertheless, the concepts discussed in the book are very basic to the spreadsheet application from Microsoft, and hence, relevant regardless of the version. The book is clearly meant for an absolute beginner, and anyone with more than a few weeks of experience with Excel 2000 will find this book passable. But this book is capable of having a novice up and running with Excel in no time. Explanations are lucid, simple, and free of boring and unnecessary technical jargon. The author has taken the pain of discussing even the minutest steps when explaining a feature/function. But alas! The book's fault lies not in the form, but the substance, i.e. in its coverage of the subject matter. It covers only the very basic steps in understanding and working with formulas, errors, and functions. The book could have easily spanned a few more topics that would have enriched the experience and knowledge of the readers.Anyways! This book is a good reference to keep on one's shelf - atleast until the time that one gets fluent with the tricks and trades of Excel.
