Word 2007 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))

Just another dummy book. This one is okay I guess, but not as good as the others that I have read. Too much of the goofy stuff that is really not needed, even for dummies......unless you are really into goofy reading material. I like a little humor in anything, but less would have been more in this one!

This is such a great book. You really can be a dummy and you will still learn everything you need to know about WORD. Ditto for Dan Gookin's book on PCs for Dummies. Mr. Gookin's books are extremely well organized and excellently written, but the thing I love most about them is the humor. They really are funny and that is a big boon to the reader, especially one who dreads dry instruction. I read this book cover to cover and it has saved me hours of pain at the computer.

It Helps to Know the Lingo

I just switched to Word 2007. I found that the terms for commands had changed so that I had to read the whole book in order to find what I wanted because I could not always find the term I was familiar with in the index. The book does cover most of what is needed in order to use Word 2007. I can't fault the writers for the changes that Microsoft made in their belief that they were making the program simpler to use.

Some Help
Review DateF2008-05-14  RatingF
It doesn't answer the nasty pagination problem I encountered. Word would stop numbering pages after a couple in a file, go back to the previous page and renumber it incorrectly, then not number the ones after it consecutively just keep placing the same number on each page, etc. There appears to be no way to number pages except in headers or footers either, as far as WORD FOR DUMMIES indicates, as best I can tell. There were one or two other places WORD FOR DUMMIES turned out to be clueless, too; but it's better than nada. Word is vastly inferior word processing software. WordPerfect is much better. Writers I know despise Word, and curse having to use it because publishing adopted it as the standard for submissions. It is a shame it was adopted so widely, apparently by executives in companies who were sold a bill of goods about it by Microsoft, when they would never have to actually use it. Pretty typical executive behavior--making decisions about various office systems their underlings will have to use without actual facts.

This is a very straightforward book on Word 2007. Very easy to navigate and read. I learned a lot from it.

Why Should I Upgrade to Office 2008 for Macintosh?

Author Jim Elferdink talks about whatfs new in Office 2008 for Macintosh. If youfre still using Office 2004, youfll find some great reasons to upgrade. Jim also fills you in on some cool features that Office for Windows canft match, and why you may not need to invest in iWork!

What are the best new features that will make folks want to upgrade to Office 2008?
Publishing Layout view. If you use Word to create formatted documents like letters and brochures, youfll find it so much easier to do now in the new Publishing Layout view than in the old Page Layout view. Publishing Layout view is actually quite similar to Pages; both are very usable. Itfs a huge boon for Word people|if you havenft bought Pages, now you wonft have to!
MyDay. I really enjoy Entouragefs MyDay feature. Assuming youfre not working on a laptop that doesnft have screen space to spare, I recommend keeping MyDay open in the corner of your screen. Thatfs what I do! It helps me keep track of my appointments and schedule. If youfve got appointments every 20 minutes or just a lot going on in your day, itfs great to have it all at a glance. It also helps you remember to go pick up the kids. (And you can feel superior to your Windows friends. Therefs nothing resembling MyDay in Office for Windows.) Project Center. Entouragefs Project Center has been streamlined and beautified for 2008, but itfs still very underutilized. It takes a little extra effort to learn, but once youfve got it up and running, if youfre doing any kind of a project that involves Office documents or even files from other programs, itfs a great timesaver. It lets you keep shortcuts to all these documents, plus email related to the project, in one window. The Project Center makes it easy to categorize email, contacts, notes, and documents. Things donft get lost, and you donft have to worry about Mac OS X labels and other ways to categorize things. (Office for Windows also has nothing like the Project Center.)
Formula Builder. In Excel, one of the greatest new features is the formula builder. If you use Excel much for formulas at all, especially more complicated ones, itfs really a timesaver. It helps you get those things created and working much faster than you could do before.
Elements Gallery. The Elements Gallery concept is really great because it carries over from one program to the other, gives the programs a consistent feel. If youfre using a lot of templates or AutoShapes, youfll find it a quick way to get at all that stuff. You could do all these things before, but it was a lot harder to find what you were looking for.

So, are there any disadvantages to upgrading to Office 2008?
Publishing Layout view can be frustratingly slow on G4 Macs, especially when youfre trying to move layout elements around onscreen. I would only use it on an Intel Mac. The same caveat holds true for PowerPoint; itfs hard to move things around. But the rest of the suite works great on faster G4 machines.
Office 2008 uses the same new, XML-based file format as Office 2007 for Windows. Itfs great not to have to worry when someone with Office 2007 on a PC sends you something. Office 2008 can open those documents right up. But now when you send documents to Mac folks who havenft upgraded, they wonft be able to open them! Once you upgrade to Office 2008, youfve got to be aware that not everyone else has, and (unless you have a real need to use the XML format) set your Save options (in Preferences) to the older format so there wonft be problems with your attachments.
Then therefs the macro problem. Any macros you wrote in earlier versions of Office use the Visual Basic programming language (VBA), and they wonft work in Office 2008! If youfve written a lot of macros for yourself, youfll have to stick with Office 2004 until you have time to rewrite them in AppleScript.

What do you like best about "Office 2008 for Macintosh: The Missing Manual?"
Ifm happy with the way this book turned out. I think it covers everything you need to use this really powerful suite of programs for all your work. One chapter Ifm particularly fond of, and which I think is missing from every other PowerPoint book Ifve looked at, is Chapter 15|Planning Great Presentations. It helps you prepare for your presentation and shows you how to use PowerPoint for its true purpose. PowerPoint isnft doing the presentation|you are. Youfre the star of the show! Unfortunately, too many people think itfs the other way around.

Office 2008 for Macintosh Manual
Review DateF2008-09-29  RatingF
Love the manual. Have used Excel and Word from the beginning, but upgraded to Office 2008 and ordered the manual at the same time. My old manual are dog eared and well used and this one is starting out the same way. Very useful. Would not hesitate to buy again.

Good manual--had most of what I needed
Review DateF2008-08-17  RatingF
A tip: don't buy manuals for your new software until you have used it for a while. Use 'help' functions built in your software as much as possible. Document your big questions in a list and when you've got maybe 4-5 questions, that's the time to check out the manuals.

When shopping, I pull out every manual I can find for the software and sit down and read. The key aspects of a good technical manual are organization and ease of reading.

Ultimately, I buy the book that answers all or most of the questions I still have after working with the software for a while.

This is a good manual. It's got both a book and an online form. Note the online form is available for free for a limited time, then you will need to pay a subscription fee.

It's not a bad idea at all to have an online version as well as the book:

Online is available if you're traveling and don't have the book in hand.
Online searches can be quicker than the book.
An online version will be updated when new versions of the software come out and/or new issues about the software arise.

The downside of this manual--it's got a lot more information than I currently need. It didn't answer the one pressing issue I had about resuming a document at the last edit and both my husband and I searched for that one question.

Still, my very technical husband and I both like the O'Reilly line of software manuals because they tend to be some of the most complete out there. Add in the online versions and you have a book that should last beyond the first blush of software use.

This book is the perfect companion to the Word 2007, as neither will tell you want you want to know...And like Word 2007 itself is is very "user hostile" and near impossible to use..... Everytime time that I have tried to use it to look directions on a procedure , guess what, the subject wasn't there....I sent my copy back

I find this book a gem of information for the changes to Word 2007. The new program has so many things on the toolbar that I will never use, it is confusing and time consuming finding what I want. Plus the cluttered tool bar takes up my window space. This book has shown me shortcuts to get where I want to be and to unclutter some of the toolbar.

Save Your Money
Review DateF2008-03-24  RatingF
One reviewer has said you would think that Microsoft would spend more money and time on protecting is manual and this shows. I totally agree. If you want to learn how to use Microsoft word 2007 I would suggest you look for a different kind of manual.
This book depends entirely upon your using the so-called practice files on the CD. If these practice files don't show you what you need to know, you're out of luck. Let's take a look at some examples of how the book works:
The instructions for sending a fax are included in a text box about 3 x 5 inches and tell you virtually nothing about how to send a fax.
Instructions for adding bookmarks and cross-references occupied four pages of text and the only instruction really useful is found in a text box consisting of three sentences.
Instructions for creating and printing labels is covered in four pages of the text and refers you to the different elements of the practice files on the CD. Hopefully the files will show you everything you need to know because the text tells you nothing.
Chapter 6 "instructs" you on working with graphics symbols and equations. Of course it only tells you how to use the practice files.
This book takes up a lot of wasted space in your bookcase. In the interest in conserving both space and money you might want to consider purchasing a teaching disk. These are normally pretty useless things, but no more so than this Microsoft text. I give it one star because it does look impressive sitting on your shelf.

Outstanding!

In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire Step-By-Step series covering MS Office. I strongly suggest any student, curious George or researcher to pick up a copy and read it. I recently purchased MS 2007 Access, Excel, Power Point and Word set in the Step-By-Step series. The authors are concise in their descriptions without being boring and the information is invaluable.

Another of the great Step by Step series which I felt quite excited about to find that the new features of this program were so clearly and methodically explained with excellent tutorials to make the learning experience easier. I can only encourage the authors of this series to keep up with the good work.

Good Job
Review DateF2008-09-24  RatingF
Well written, has step by step training and I would recommend it for all beg & intermedate users.
It does not cover things like how to put a file path in the footer by using quick parts (a tab on the footer screen), if you like short cuts or know how to do a task other than a menu, this book is weak. I like to customize things and like to ALWAYS have a backup way of doing things, which is the way of Microsoft Products.
Do your research, but when in doubt, this book is a safe bet.

I have found it well written, easy to understand and well organized. Save some time and get this book.

A must have

If you have Word 2007 or plan to get it, this book is a must have. Word 2007 is DIFFERENT and then some, but all the answers are here. The large heavy tome is indexed and divided so that the answer to almost any question can be found. It may even tell you more than you care to know. Not a beach read, but a very helpful desk reference.

When I received this book, which I thought took too long, I found the bottom right of the cover was ripped off leaving a small gap. Then the next 20 pages or so, same corner, were all folded up. Actually I am very disappointed and will probably see if I can sell it at my campus's bookstore, where they will buy back books, and pay full price for it on my campus.

This book have step-by-step instructions. I highly recommend this book.

Decide Yourself Which Suits You
Review DateF2008-07-30  RatingF
I don't own the book but I've checked and read it at a nearby store. I sat down and read it for nearly an hour (because I'm serious about jumping in to learn InDesign) Well, what I can say is; If you are a beginner, then use the Adobe Classroom book. It have all the tutorial and hands on training using the file included. You NEED hands training, file example and step by step instruction and finally see it done. That's how you TRULY learn. Although there has been a negative review on Adobe InDesign CS3 Classroom book, but its a good start for total beginner. Don't be too ambitious when you're just starting out (like immediately attracted to a 5 star book telling you can produce professional layout plus easy enough to follow.)
So, for me; this book is not for beginners. If you have strong mind and can remember things just by reading, then you can get this book (or if you're a beginner who like that style of learning). This book is more like a reference book. (If you want to know I'm suit enough to make this comments, then go to http://adrs-tester.blogspot.com. Decide yourself whenever you want to accept my review or not after seeing the example website. Well, sorry Blogger, I crash you to test my working environment on a free platform... :-)

Great resource book for students and professionals
Review DateF2008-07-12  RatingF
Having bought this book as a requirement for my Page Layout class, I was surprised to see that I actually used the book. Like the QuickStart book for Quark, it offers invaluable information clearly, and is laid out in a streamlined and clean fashion. I have used InDesign CS2 in the past, but CS3 had new tools and shortcuts. This book defines InDesign CS3 effortlessly which is wonderful for students. I have come back time and again to this book when I get stuck. Whether you're a beginner to Adobe InDesign, an intermediate user, or professional you will definitely find a use for this book.

Not for the faint of heart
Review DateF2008-03-24  RatingF
I've used InDesign from the first iteration six or seven years ago ... I am reasonibly glib in all its nuances, until I got CS3.

This version adds a LOT of new methods and techniques which aren't too intuitive. But ... Sandee Cohen came to the rescue with this new, comprehensive manual, with a lot of test, methods and various explantions of techniques. As usual, you did good Sandee. Thanks for holding my hand while I scratched my head.

Not for beginners
Review DateF2008-02-03  RatingF
This book is very in depth and the author is clearly knowledgeable, so for that I give it high marks. However, as someone who was completely new to InDesign (and all Adobe programs), I was hoping for a guide that was easy to follow and that gave me some sort of path to take to become comfortable with the program. This guide claims to be "the quick, easy way" to learn but there is no step-by-step instruction and the pages are cluttered with information. I was hoping for a "classroom approach," and this guide reads more like a reference manual with no cohesion between instructions. It's got all the answers, but the presentation is clearly geared toward more experienced users. Anyone approaching Adobe products for the first time should look elsewhere. I am going to try CS3 for dummies and hope for better results.

I am new to scrapbooking. I found the instructions in this book to be awesome. I had never even thought of using my computer to make greetings and embellishments, but using the WordArt makes it simple. I wouldn't have even thought of it if not for the great instructions and illustrations in this book. I use this book to make pamplets and filers as well, something I had never tried before. This book is great for those of us that didn't have computer education in school and need to get a quick "fix" on computer literacy.

Apart from the attractive visual instructions, I found very little that was new information from the Word 2000 textbook that I started with ten years ago. This would be a great textbook for beginners.

Very user friendly. Much easier to use than the manual that was provided for Word 2007. A great book to browse through to find capabilities that are available in Word 2007 that a user might not have even known were available.

Description
Microsoft Word has grown considerably in power, sophistication and capability over the past decade, but one thing that hasn't changed since the early '90s is its user interface. The simple toolbar in version 2.0 has been packed with so many features since then that few users know where to find them all. Consequently, more and more people are looking for "insider" tips that will allow them to use these advanced and often hidden features. Microsoft has addressed this problem in Word 2007 by radically redesigning the user interface with a tabbed toolbar that makes every feature easy to locate and use. Unfortunately, Microsoft's documentation is as scant as ever, so even though you will be able to find advanced features, you might not know what to do with them.

Word 2007: The Missing Manual, written specifically for this version of the software, explains basics like how to create documents, enter and edit text, format, print, and fax. You will will also learn how to create sophisticated page layouts, insert forms and tables, use graphics, and create book-length documents with outlines and Master Documents. Coverage also includes how to share documents with other people and programs, create web pages, automate documents with fields, and automate tasks with macros and the Visual Basic scripting language. This book shows you how to do it all.

Word 2007 Missing Manual - Helpful, not overwhelming, just right
Review DateF2008-11-16  RatingF
good book, not too long, readable, helpful. I wish Word 2007 was a better program. I really do not like it. I have been on Word (Office) XP a long time. So many clicks to make changes. Everything is in a weird place. Plus, if I save anything in 2007 format, I have no idea if others can read the file, so I still save everything as XP,2003 format.

Thus, I had to buy the book. Really made it quick to adjust to Word 2007, but I am considering going back to Office XP!

"Word 2007: The Missing Manual not only explains basics like how to create documents, enter and edit text, format, print, and fax, but also learn how to create sophisticated page layouts, insert forms and tables, use graphics, and create book-length documents with outlines and Master Documents. Coverage also includes how to share documents with other people and programs, create web pages, automate documents with fields, and automate tasks with macros and the Visual Basic scripting language. This book shows you how to do it all."

The description above is about right. This book explains basics and teaches more advanced concepts. Collaboration and sharing are the main new and important issues with Office 2007, so Word 2007 is an important piece of that pie. I do not know if "This book shows you how to do it all", but it does show you quite a number of things that are necessary to know to get more out of Word.

My experience agreed with almost everything written. I have been a Word user for many years and find it to be everything I need in a word processing program. I thought the Introduction had a succinct review of the ribbon, Building Blocks, Live Preview, file format changes, and a few others that are really minor changes. Increased security in Word 2007 is welcome but let?s wait until the fat lady sings.

The topics start with The Missing Credits, then moves to Introduction to Part One (Chapters 1 through 7), Part Two (Chapters 8 through 12), Part Three (Chapters 13 through 16), Part Four (Chapters 17 through 20), and Part Five, the Appendix. All parts are well organized, outlined, and logical.

This is not a complicated book, but has a lot of action in it. If you read it and do what it explains, then many easy actions remain easy instead of not quite so accurate memories of what you should do in certain circumstance. Expressive examples are seen throughout this book.

Chapter 18: Changing your security settings is one of the better chapters. Digital signatures, Trust Center, and Removing Personal Information are worth the cost of the book.

Chapter 19: Introducing macros and visual basic was my favorite chapter. The Developer tab, recording macros, running macros, and testing macros were very well written. Reading Visual Basic code and using Digital signatures were good too. Getting help was well done. I hope developers get a lot of use out of this chapter. Another one that is worth the cost of the book.

The 522+ pages were easy to read and understand, partly told as a story. I read it in 3 days. There were typos and grammar errors, starting on page 4 with "yougraduate" (in the last paragraph on that page). This should not cause alarm in many books, but Word is one. If this is an editing or printing error, I apologize in advance, but if the author of a book on Word does not use the spelling and grammar checker, or does not believe the red squiggly underline and take action, then this starts to make me feel uneasy about his expertise. I'm not going to go over all the errors, someone else can do that but this is the only one of the four Missing Manual books I have reviewed where I have a concern about the expertise and thoroughness of the author and book.

I would recommend you get this book. It will pay for itself the first time the Internet goes down, you work offline using Word 2007, and you need help. This book can do that for you.

The reviews in Amazon were glowing, but, even as a reasonably experienced user of previous Word programs, I found this book not to be helpful for "routine" word processing skills, and worthless for those moving data files to the new Word 2007 format. You would think that an author would clearly describe the steps needed to transfer Word data files from XP to Vista, since that's the base of computer users.

This manual has answered most of the questions that I have had when using the latest version of Word. The one specific question that I had was how to change the tabs in the template box. I could not find this in the manual but all other questions that I have had have been answered. The manual was well worth the money spent.

An Excellent Missing Manual
Review DateF2007-12-18  RatingF
I am about half way through this book. I am reading and practicing what I have read on my PC. So, it is taking time. I have learned a lot from Chris Glover's Word 2007 the Missing Manual. I would recommend this to anyone who is faced with having to work with Word 2007. It is about 300 to 400 pages shorter than Que's tomb on the subject so if you need something that explains all those things that the average user never uses, then go for that book. Meanwhile, this book gives you just what you need to become an intermediate user.

For a pre-computer generation senior citizen accustomed to learning about intricate procedures by reading thorough, clearly written explanations, this book has proved quite useful. For younger persons who grew up with access to personal computers, the book may be, for the most part, unnecessary.

Although I've been using Word for almost 10 years, I learned something new in the first 10 pages of this book. Word's automatic processes have always frustrated me; it was like a wriggling animal... you were never sure what would happen next. It looks like this book will be the key to the critter and I finally working together.

Good Experience

Several years back, probably more than ten, I read one of the "for Dummies" books. It's been so long ago, I don't even remember what the book was about, but I do remember that I was very disappointed in it. For that reason, I've always steered away from this series of books. However recently, I found myself in need of WORD 2003 FOR DUMMIES by Dan Gookin. I have to admit that I have been shocked by just how good this book is.

I'm not a techie person by any means, and that makes me perfect this book. It is written in easy to understand terms and takes otherwise complex issues down to their basic level of simplicity. So far, I have turned to this book maybe half a dozen times and in each case, have mastered the subject with little difficulty.

If you're like me, this may not be a book that you read through, but it is certainly one that you will reference as the need occurs. To that end, I am very satisfied with this book. I have certainly changed my mind about this series of books. I know different people write these books, but my first experience was so disappointing, I judged all of these books by their cover.

CAN'T RATE. I DID NOT RECEIVE MY ORDER

Book Good, CD Wrong

The book is in excellent condition but it came with the wrong CD. It was a library book so I'm sure that's why it was mixed up. However I wish the vendor had listed no CD rather than the wrong one.

Word 2003 Step by Step. Finally, a manual that helps!
Review DateF2008-04-14  RatingF
I've been using Word 2000 for years. I was finally able to get most of thr functions I needed to work, but it was a "try & try again" approach. The on line manual is helpful, IF you know what questions to ask. And most software has features you might not be aware of, and therefore can't use.

The Word 2003 Step by Step manual is wonderful. You can find what you want to do easily in the index, then get step by step instructions on how to do the project. You can just read the index and/or manual, and learn of the many features available that you never knew existed, and so hadn't tried to use.

It's like having an instructor on hand, any time you want one. I expanded my use of Word greatly, just by learning about new features, on learning how to do things I knew existed, but couldn't figure out how to access.

I highly recommend this book.

Great Book!
Review DateF2007-10-26  RatingF
This book is for everyone, novice, intermediate and experts (who need a refreshers course). Its plain and to the point. There was one section of it that was not quite right, however, this is no fault of the seller but the writers of the book. Once you over look that it works just as stated in the book. The book got to my freight forwarder quicker than I expected.
